Automatic Knives Explained: Features, Uses & Benefits

What is an automatic knife and how does it work?

An automatic knife, also known as a switchblade, is a folding knife that uses a spring-powered mechanism to deploy the blade at the push of a button. Unlike traditional folding knives, automatic knives allow quick, one-handed opening without manually moving the blade. Buck's 110 Folding Hunter Auto and 112 Ranger Auto bring this convenient operation to two of our most trusted designs.

What is the difference between an automatic knife and a manual folding knife?

The primary difference is how the blade opens. Automatic knives use a button-activated mechanism to deploy the blade, while manual folding knives require the user to open the blade by hand. Both offer dependable cutting performance, but automatic knives provide added convenience when one-handed operation matters. The 110 Folding Hunter Auto combines the familiar design of the original 110 with push-button deployment, giving customers a modern alternative to a proven classic.

Are automatic knives legal to own and carry?

Automatic knife laws vary by state and local jurisdiction. Some locations permit ownership and carry, while others restrict blade length, carry methods, or possession. Federal regulations may also apply to certain sales and shipments. Before purchasing or carrying an automatic knife, always verify the laws where you live and travel.

Buck Knives will not ship automatic knives to Canada and the following states: CA, CT, MD, MN, NM, NJ, VT, or WA, with the exception of the 839 Mini Deploy knife which can ship to California and the 112 Auto which can be shipped to Vermont.

Buck Knives will not ship automatic knives to PO/APO addresses.

What makes a good automatic knife for everyday carry?

A quality automatic knife should offer reliable deployment, secure blade lockup, comfortable handling, and durable materials. Blade length, weight, and overall size also matter when choosing a knife for daily use. Buck's 112 Ranger Auto offers a more compact alternative to the larger 110 Folding Hunter Auto, making it worth considering for those who prefer a smaller knife without giving up the convenience of automatic deployment.

How do you maintain an automatic knife?

Regular cleaning and proper lubrication help keep an automatic knife operating smoothly. Remove dirt and debris from the blade, handle, and pivot area, dry the knife thoroughly, and apply a small amount of appropriate lubricant when needed. Check that the blade deploys and locks correctly before use. Avoid disassembling the automatic mechanism yourself. Like other Buck knives, our automatic models are backed by the Buck Forever Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
